These photographies show the Chungkhar monastery at different periods, from the time of Garab Dorje and Dorje Wangmo to nowadays.
Drubpon Ngawang and his siblings rebuilt Chungkhar in the memory of their parents whose great regret was to have been unable to preserve the familial monastery, due to a lack of means.
This first restoration did not withstand the particularly violent earthquake of September 2009.

Here is the second part of the photos shot in February.
Thanks to a rented mechanical digger, deep pits were dug for the reinforced concrete foundations.

Works : Feb. 2010 (part1)

Stage of Works : Dec. 2009

The seism of September 2009 that shook Bhutan and several regions of the Himalayas nearly ruined the monastery of Chungkhar completely.
Threatening to collapse at any moment, the monastery had to be secured by dismantling the roof as well as the corbels and woodworks.
The statue of Guru Rinpoche was evacuated and protected.
The sound building materials were carefully stored for a possible future reuse.

The situation after the seism

Severly damaged by the earthquake, the monastery has partly collapsed.
The brick walls that are still standing have large cracks and may fall over anytime.
The wooden corbels and the roof structure, warped by the tremors, have to be dismantled.
The indoors are also in ruins : all the paintings and wall ornaments have been damaged and the floors worked loose.
