Reconstruction projet of Chungkhar Monastery

The Monastery of Chungkhar, in Bhutan, was founded more than a century ago. It is a place of cult and gathering for the eighteen surrounding villages.

Severly damaged by the seism that shook Bhutan in September 2009 and which tremors were felt as far as the capital of Assam, the monastery of Chungkhar is nearly entirely in ruins.

Chungkhar is a family estate and therefore cannot receive any help from the State. Thus, Drubpön Ngawang Tenzin, representative of the Drukpa Lineage in Europe, has launched this project for the promotion of the Chungkhar monastery and the funding of its reconstruction.

These photographies show the Chungkhar monastery at different periods, from the time of Garab Dorje and Dorje Wangmo to nowadays.
Drubpon Ngawang and his siblings rebuilt Chungkhar in the memory of their parents whose great regret was to have been unable to preserve the familial monastery, due to a lack of means.
This first restoration did not withstand the particularly violent earthquake of September 2009.
